New chat service "Matrix" replaces Rocket.chat at the University of Kassel

Dear members of the University of Kassel,

The IT Service Center of the University of Kassel is introducing Matrix, a new, modern chat service that replaces Rocket.chat.

Matrix enables secure, flexible and open communication - both in individual and group chats. As a standard client, we recommend the Element application, which is available on all common platforms (web, desktop, mobile).

Schedule:

- Matrix isnow available to all employees and students (via the web interface or the Element client).

- Since 14.11.2025 the Element-Client is automatically available in the Uni Kassel Client.

- Rocket.chat will be operated until 31.03.2026 and then discontinued.

Security note:

Matrix supports end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for private chats and closed rooms. This means that messages can only be read by the people involved - the server itself has no access.

When setting up encryption for the first time, a recovery key is generated. Please keep this in a safe place (e.g. as a printout). Only with this key will you be able to access encrypted chats again after a device loss or reinstallation.

Matrix not only allows you to communicate with internal colleagues. It is also possible to communicate with external Matrix users (e.g. from other universities) who have an account with another Matrix provider. This can simplify communication with external parties, but also entails risks. You can tell from a person's user name whether they have a University of Kassel account. Internal accounts always end with ":uni-kassel.de", e.g. "example.user:uni-kassel.de".

Help and instructions:

A detailed introduction and step-by-step instructions for using Matrix and Element can be found at: https://www.uni-kassel.de/go/matrix

We recommend switching to Matrix at an early stage to ensure a smooth transition.
