Acoustic Measurement of Young’s Modulus (Sonelastic)

The Sonelastic system enables the non-destructive determination of elastic material parameters such as modulus of elasticity, shear modulus and Poisson's ratio. The measurement is based on the impulse resonance method: A sample with a defined geometry is mechanically excited, the resulting vibration signal is recorded via a microphone and evaluated using frequency analysis (FFT).

Specifications

Based on the characteristic resonance frequencies of flexural and torsional vibration modes, as well as the specimen mass and dimensions, the software automatically calculates the corresponding material parameters. The method is characterized by short measurement times, high repeatability, and minimal specimen preparation. Since the test is nondestructive, samples can be measured repeatedly or used for further investigations afterwards. Reliable results require suitable specimen geometries and correct positioning of both the microphone and the excitation point.
