Welcome to the Institute of Mechanics

The Institute of Mechanics was founded in 1983, is part of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Kassel, and is divided into four research areas: AI in Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Technical Dynamics, and Technical Mechanics / Continuum Mechanics. Since its founding, it has been located at Holländischer Platz, the university’s central campus.

Its research covers all classical areas of applied mechanics. The approaches employed are theoretical, analytical/numerical, and experimental in nature. In addition to computing clusters and a computer lab, three laboratories and a technical facility are available for this purpose. The focus is on both the analysis of physical processes in solids and fluids and the further development of suitable methods for modeling and numerical analysis. The models cover all relevant scales, from the microstructural level to the engineering macrolevel and the technical system.

In terms of teaching, the Institute of Mechanics supports numerous fields of study, ranging from mechanical engineering and mechatronics to renewable energy and energy efficiency, as well as civil engineering, electrical engineering, and mathematics. The curriculum includes required modules such as Technical Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Vibration Theory, and Machine Dynamics; Dynamics for Mechatronics Engineers; Modeling and Simulation; as well as numerous elective modules.
