Research Assistant (EG 13 TV-H)

Part-time position, with 50% of the working hours of a full-time employee, for a period of 18 months within the Junior Research Group: “StatusDiversities“ (§ 2 Abs. 1 WissZeitVG).

The research assistant will support the development of the Junior Research Group: „StatusDiversities“ led by Dr Franziska Meissner. The group’s research objective is to study the link between the regulation of migration by way of many different legal status categories on the one hand and the everyday dynamics of urban diversity on the other hand. A central focus will be on diversity dynamics in smaller cities and on how differentiations between migrants are relevant for better understanding migrant housing biographies.

The research will build on innovative research methods that bridge the gap between qualitative and quantitative approaches. Of particular importance will be data visualisations, GIS supported analysis and network analytic approaches. Further local social and news media are to be scraped and the use of smartphone assisted methods for data collection will be developed. Applicants should explicitly outline any specific interests and skills in ICT driven research.

 

StatusDiversities, in a first instance, will research diversity dynamics in Kassel. On this basis an elaborated and internationally comparative research project will be developed and submitted in application for a major research grant.

Responsibilities:

  • Support with data-collection and analysis and the preparation of common publication projects.
  • Organisational and administrative support in establishing the research group, including the preparation of a major grant application.
  • Teaching Duties within the department (2 hours of class time per semester week).
  • Presentation of Research findings to external international experts.

 

Requierments:

Essential:

  • Completed course of academic study (Masters degree) either in the Social Sciences, Applied Informatics or digital humanities.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English, good knowledge of German is desirable, other language competences will be positively evaluated.
  • Well-developed organisational and communication skills.

Desirable

  • Good knowledge and competences in the use of qualitative and/or quantitative methods.
  • Already developed knowledge of ICT supported methods or a willingness to expand competences.
  • Experience in conducting semi-structured and expert interviews.
  • Previous involvement in the drafting of grant applications.

Applicants should have a good knowledge of current debates in Migration Studies and Urban Sociology or Geography and be interested in developing their own independent research project (dissertation project) in this research field.
