CHANGES partnership: Kassel delegation visits Universitas Mataram

CHANGES partnership: Kassel delegation visits Universitas Mataram

As part of the CHANGES - Exploring Critical Sustainable Development Education from Global Perspectives project, a delegation from the Kassel Center for Teacher Education (ZLB) visited Universitas Mataram (Unram) on the Indonesian island of Lombok at the end of July/beginning of August 2025. The aim of the meeting was to establish an interdisciplinary partnership in the field of teacher education for sustainable development.

The Kassel delegation - consisting of Dr. Ellen Christoforatou (Managing Director of the ZLB), Prof. Dr. Claudia Schlaak (Executive Director of the ZLB) and Prof. Dr. Nina Skorsetz-Gumprecht (Department of Primary School Development and Multi-perspective Subject Teaching) - was welcomed by Unram Rector Prof. Ir. Bambang Hari Kusumo, M.Agr.St., Ph.D., the Dean of the Faculty of Education (FKIP) and numerous faculty members.

During their stay, the delegation not only gained insights into the work of Universitas Mataram, but also into the ecological, economic and social challenges of Lombok. Discussions with local experts focused on sustainable development issues and their significance for teacher education.

The CHANGES project, which was launched in 2025, is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD ) as part of the Lehramt.International program. It brings together universities from Argentina, Indonesia, Canada and South Africa to create an international, transcultural and interdisciplinary network. This creates new opportunities for student teachers and lecturers at the University of Kassel to look at global challenges from different regional and cultural perspectives.

A delegation from Indonesia will visit the University of Kassel in September 2025 to further deepen the partnership. The highlight will be the international kick-off conference at the end of September, at which academics from all partner universities will present their educational approaches, exchange perspectives and develop joint project ideas.

CHANGES will create a global network for future-oriented teacher training - based on common goals, international exchange and the conviction that education is a key to sustainable development and transformation.
