The basic internship should give you an early impression of your future field of work. The aim is to get to know school practice from a teacher's perspective. Through observations and your own teaching experiments, you will gain initial insights that form the basis for a change of perspective towards a professional teacher image. You will also reflect on your attitude and aptitude towards the teaching profession. There are therefore three thematic focuses: Aptitude, observation and teaching.

The basic internship is usually completed in the second or third semester and is worth 10 credits. Registration takes place in the first or second semester.

The basic internship includes a five-week school stay (in a block) and project seminars with a total of 4 SWS.

University part

  • 2 SWS preparatory course in the core curriculum (during the semester)
  • 2 SWS course accompanying and evaluating the internship (during the lecture-free period)

Practical part

Block phase (100 hours)

5 weeks with an attendance of approx. 100 hours at school (compulsory attendance for the whole week)

Part of the evaluative course is a 30-minute final interview with each individual student, in which the decision to study and suitability with a view to later professional activity are to be discussed.

Registration takes place at the respective time via the homepage of the Department of Practical School Studies ("Practical School Studies - Basic Internship Registration") and ONE SEMESTER in advance!

Allocations are usually published by email during the first week in September (winter semester) or March (summer semester).

Current information can be found here.

Activities at school are generally unpaid as part of the basic internship. You cannot carry out any paid work (e.g. substitute teaching at the internship school) during the basic internship.

It is also not possible to have such activities recognized as a basic internship. However, recognition is possible as part of the second training phase, the preparatory service ("Referendariat").

The University of Kassel will not require a certificate of good conduct from you. However, your internship school may request this.
