The practical semester is designed to give you an early impression of your future field of work. The aim is to get to know school practice from a teacher's perspective. Through observations and your own teaching experiments, you will gain initial insights that form the basis for a change of perspective towards a professional teacher image. You will also reflect on your attitude and aptitude towards the teaching profession. There are therefore three thematic focuses: Aptitude, observation and teaching.

The practical semester is completed in the second year of study(3rd or 4th semester). With 30 credits, the practical semester module has the scope of a normal semester in which you take part in regular school activities.

Please note that registration only takes place once a year in February (last time in February 2024). If you would like to complete the practical semester under the old MPO after this date, please register at refsps@uni-kassel.de.

The internship semester is generally divided into a block phase and a long phase. In addition, you will attend three accompanying courses at the university with a total of 8 SWS (two of them in the subjects with 2 SWS each and one in the core study program with 4 SWS).

Practical school part

Block phase (100 h)

Four weeks with an attendance of approx. 100 hours at the school (compulsory attendance for the whole week!). Takes place during the lecture-free period.

Long phase (150 h)

Eleven to twelve weeks with attendance of approx. 150 hours at school. Takes place during the semester and usually begins after the fall break (winter semester) or after the Easter break (summer semester).

You are expected to complete your internship semester in your second year of study (3rd or 4th semester). Registration for this takes place in your first year of study from 01.02. - 28.02. and is mandatory. It applies to both semesters, but you can indicate a preference as to whether you would like to complete your internship in winter (3rd semester) or summer (4th semester).

Please note that registration only takes place once a year in February (last time in February 2024). If you would like to complete the practical semester under the old MPO after this date, please register at refsps@uni-kassel.de.

Even though we will make every effort to accommodate your wishes, the final decision must remain with the Department of Practical School Studies for organizational reasons. You will find out how you have been allocated when the allocations are published by email by mid-July (winter semester) or mid-January (summer semester) at the latest. Please do not plan any vacation until then! If you are unable to attend the preparatory seminars, this will usually result in a failed attempt!

Activities at the school are generally unpaid as part of the internship semester. You cannot carry out any paid work (e.g. substitute teaching at the internship school) during the internship semester.

It is also not possible to have such activities recognized as an internship semester. However, recognition is possible as part of the second training phase, the preparatory service ("Referendariat").

The University of Kassel will not require a certificate of good conduct from you. However, your internship school may request this.
