L1 - Practical semester MPO 2023

The internship semester is usually completed during the fourth or fifth academic semester and is worth 20 credits.

Applies to all first-year students starting in the Winter Semester 25/26: When you register for the introductory internship in the first semester, you are automatically registered for the internship semester. If you complete the introductory practicum in the second semester, you will be automatically registered for the practicum semester in the fourth semester. If you complete the introductory practicum in the third semester, you will be automatically registered for the practicum semester in the fifth semester.

The practicum semester is divided into three modules totaling 9 SWS (3 SWS each in mathematics and German, and 3 SWS in elementary school pedagogy).

Effective for all first-year students starting in the Winter-Spring semester 2025/26: Completion of the academic portion of the introductory internship is a prerequisite for participating in the practical semester. If you are registered for the introductory internship, you are automatically registered for the practical semester, which you will begin two semesters after successfully completing the introductory internship.

Students who are not in their first semester (Winter Semester 25/26) and have completed their basic practicum without being automatically registered for the practicum semester should register via the Department of School Practicum Studies’ website by the respective registration deadline!

Registration for the basic practicum takes place via the website of the Office for School-Based Practical Studies and MUST BE COMPLETED IN THE FIRST SEMESTER!

Activities at the school are generally unpaid as part of the internship semester. You cannot carry out any paid work (e.g. substitute teaching at the internship school) during the internship semester.

It is also not possible to have such activities recognized as an internship semester. However, recognition is possible as part of the second training phase, the preparatory service ("Referendariat").

The University of Kassel will not require a certificate of good conduct from you. However, your internship school may request this.

According to § 30a para. 1 no. 2 lit. b Federal Central Register Act

You can only study two subjects on an equal footing in the teaching degree (MPO 2023). In the "third subject", which is called an extension subject according to MPO 2023, and all other teacher training subjects that you study, you must also complete a practical semester module. This also applies if you have already completed a first state examination or a first and second state examination and would like to study an additional subject (this also falls under "extension subject").

Therefore, please register for the practical semester module of the respective subject.

In the event that you have already completed an internship in a related subject, you can submit an application to the module examination board of the respective subject via the relevant examination office that you would like to attend an equivalence module instead of the internship semester (in which you do not have to go back to school).

You can submit an application if:

• You have already completed an internship semester in a related subject (e.g. history and politics). Please enclose proof of this with your application.
• you have applied for and received compensation for disadvantages. Please submit proof of this when submitting your application.

Tip: Please submit your application for an equivalence module in good time when you register for the practical semester module and inform the SPS department about the decision.

Note: In Sport, Art and Music, you will not find a separate equivalence module listed in the module examination regulations, but rather a list of alternative modules.
