Presentation of the Gustav Mahler Research Centre on January 15, 2026

In the context of this winter term's seminar “Gustav Mahler – Musik zwischen künstlerischer Autonomie und politischer Repression”, we welcome Federico Celestini – chair of Musicology at the University of Innsbruck and director of the Gustav Mahler Research Centre – on January 15, 2026 from 4PM CEST. Professor Celestini will be present online and is going to introduce the University of Kassel's students to a contemporary musicological research institution centering on a key figure in 20th-century musical life. All students interested in musicological research (or simply in Gustav Mahler and his music), including those who could not join the seminar this semester, are most welcome to participate in the event and learn more about research in music history on the basis of a concrete example. Please register by Tuesday, January 13. 2026, by sending an e-Mail to Carolin Krahn. You will then receive the link to join the event via Zoom.

Director of the German Study Center in Venice Visits Kassel

The 11th Italientag of the University of Kassel welcomed musicologist and opera expert PD Dr. Richard Erkens, the current director of the Centro Tedesco di Studi Veneziani. His talk "Once and Never Again? Opera buffa in Kassel or 'La frascatana' from 1779" at the Kassel City Museum explored the 18th century Italian opera production scene and its impact on the northern Alpine region for a broader, interdisciplinary audience. Thereby, Richard Erkens provided insights into his recent research on the subject. More details on the event and further talks delivered in this context can be read in the report by M.A. student Irmtraud Vonderheid, published in the section on International Affairs (ITALICUM) of this website.

Please note that Prof. Dr. Carolin Krahn will be on sabbatical during the summer semester of 2026 and will spend the months of April and May 2026 as a visiting researcher at the Università degli Studi di Palermo in Sicily.

During this time, her teaching duties at the University of Kassel will be taken over by Dr Emilia Pelliccia, who is also responsible for our mobility program. Among others, she will regularly host the digital information platform “Move it! Office Hours for International Experience” on studying, internships and research stays abroad as usual.

Students are asked to plan accordingly, keeping in mind that no consultation hours can be offered during April and May 2026. In urgent matters during the summer semester, please first contact the front office of Historical Musicology by sending an email to Claudia Jacobi, including a brief description of your concern.

Report on the Musicological Field Trip to Vienna in 2025

The six-day excursion to Vienna offered 15 Kassel students the opportunity to explore the "music city of Vienna" as a multi-layered urban space with simultaneous musical practices. The cooperation with the Chair of Ethnomusicology at the University of Vienna enabled students from the University of Kassel to gain insights into ongoing ethnomusicological research projects. This was realized by means of expeditions through the very different local musical scenes and visits to leading museums and archives at the interface of music history and ethnomusicology. The field trip was funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the University of Kassel's Department of Music. It opened up an intradisciplinary perspective on music, its practice and history in one of Europe's most important cultural locations, thereby reaching beyond the regular study program and combining musicological studies with hands-on experience.
