ITALICUM
Since the 2016/17 winter term, students and doctoral candidates across all disciplines at the University of Kassel have had the opportunity to earn a certificate (called ITALICUM) in interdisciplinary Italian studies as part of their degree program.
The ITALICUM program includes instruction in Italy-related subject matter – such as culture, history, philosophy, literature, and art – as well as language courses designed to help students acquire and expand their foreign language skills every semester.
The goals of this supplementary qualification, launched by the University of Kassel’s Italy Network, are to promote engagement with intercultural and transcultural identities and diversities, to support international encounters and collaboration, and to foster intercultural competence and European awareness through a comprehensive interdisciplinary program consisting of courses, workshops, and excursions both in Kassel and elsewhere, not least on-site in Italy. The Department of Historical Musicology at the Institute of Music has been collaborating with the Italy Network since the 2024/25 winter term, and as a result, courses are regularly offered that are also open to all ITALICUM students.
Since October 2026, Prof. Dr. Carolin Krahn has served as the spokesperson for the university-wide network. She is happy to answer questions and welcomes suggestions from all university members.
