Leaky pipeline at Faculty 05 and Faculty 14
Cooperation project between Departments 05 and 14 of the University of Kassel
The project "Leaky Pipeline at Faculty 05 and Faculty 14" is dedicated to the gender equality policy question of why, despite gender equality policy measures at the various university levels, women are 'lost' in the doctoral phase ("leaky pipeline") and what measures should be taken to counteract the loss of women in the doctoral phase. The aim of the project is on the one hand (I.) to generate knowledge about the reasons why women drop out during the doctoral phase by means of a qualitative analysis of the processes and factors of the leaky pipeline at Faculty 05 and Faculty 14 and on the other hand (II.) to formulate recommendations for action for different stakeholders at the faculty (dean's office/ supervisors) and at the university (gender equality standards/ promotion of early career researchers - career and personnel development/ mentoring programs/ family-friendly university) based on the empirical results. If meaningful results from qualitative surveys of doctoral candidates and alumni are available, the results will be published in a brochure in a second funding phase and presented and discussed publicly in a panel discussion. The findings and experiences from the "Leaky Pipeline at Faculty 05 and Faculty 14" project should ultimately promote an increase in young female academics and thus also be relevant for the University of Kassel's gender equality efforts beyond the Department of Social Sciences.
The study took place in cooperation between two departments and took a local look at a phenomenon discussed within gender and university research. The study addressed the following questions in particular:
- Why are women 'lost' in the doctoral phase despite gender equality policy measures at various university levels?
- What do the female doctoral candidates surveyed see as supporting and hindering factors in the doctoral process?
- What measures should be taken to counteract the 'drop-outs' of women in the doctoral phase?
