German University Badminton Championships

From May 13-16, the German University Championships for students in badminton took place at the University of Kassel after a one-year break, as no organizing university was found last year. Around 200 participants from 50 universities from all over Germany met on the long Ascension Day weekend to compete for the title of German University Champion in the team and individual competitions.

The University of Kassel organized the DHM as a seminar in conjunction with the Sports Institute. Gerhard Blömeke-Rumpf as head of university sports and Tobias Heyer as head of the one-year seminar had a team of 25 highly motivated sports students at their disposal who put on a first-class event that set new standards. The tournament management under the referees Jörg Heiskel and Regine Kolbe with the support of Felix Drude, who were responsible for the smooth running of the tournament, excellent catering and a great supporting program complemented each other to create a first-class event. Especially for small universities, the seminar model offers a form of organization that guarantees a high-quality event of this kind. TV Volkmarsen provided further competent support.

Unfortunately, the Thomas and Uber Cup finals in Kuala Lumpur and the Slovenian Open took place on the same weekend, meaning that some top student players were absent. On the other hand, it was pleasing to see a significant improvement in the number of top players in the women's section this year.

Team competition

The Final Four in the team competition, in which a total of 19 university teams took part, took place on Thursday with the familiar teams: Defending champion WG Hamburg, Uni Essen-Duisburg, WG Saarbrücken and WG Munich.
In the semi-finals, WG Hamburg and WG Munich both won 6:2 against the University of Duisburg-Essen and WG Saarbrücken.
The final was a knife-edge affair, with the score tied 4:4 and 9:9 sets. WG Hamburg was ahead on points with 325:297 and thus secured its third team title in a row.

Third place went to the University of Duisburg-Essen, who defeated WG Saarbrücken 5:3. All four teams will take part in the 7th European University Championships in Nancy/France from June 15-20.

Individual competitions

The individual competitions took place from Friday to Sunday. After three long days with hundreds of players, the favorites prevailed except for the men's doubles, where there were a few surprises. Nobody managed to win the title twice in Kassel, so that 8 players shared the titles on the court mats sponsored by Yonex.
