Kassel W.E.L.L.E. 2026: Water-Experience-Learning. Living-Sustaining

Kassel wave

The Kasseler Welle is a joint initiative of the City of Kassel, the University of Kassel and numerous partners from schools, sport and research. From the 2026/27 school year, every child in Year 2 will receive a one-week swimming project week at the Auebad: five days, 90 minutes of water time every day, supplemented by child-friendly theory units on safety and environmental protection. The Kasseler Welle makes learning to swim a matter of course for all children and at the same time sends a strong signal for educational equality, safety and the sustainable use of water.

Project team

Our project team combines the expertise of the City of Kassel, the State Education Authority, the University of Kassel, Städtische Werke, Bäderbetriebe and KVG. Together, we ensure that organization, science, infrastructure and transport mesh perfectly - so that every primary school child in Kassel learns to swim safely and successfully.

Information for parents

In the "Kasseler Welle" swimming project week, children first learn to move safely and playfully in the water. They practise gliding, floating, breathing and surfacing - basic skills that make any swimming technique possible in the first place. Step by step, they develop body awareness and confidence in the water. We also talk about dangerous situations: What do currents, cold or deep water mean and how do I recognize risks in good time? In short theory sessions, the children learn important swimming rules, learn simple methods of self-rescue, such as how to stay afloat in the event of a cramp, and receive age-appropriate advice on rescuing others, for example how to call for help or throw a lifebuoy without putting themselves in danger. Our aim is for your child not only to learn how to swim, but also to understand how to protect themselves and others in and on the water.
