How can we achieve diverse, beautiful and productive landscapes? What interests come into play? How can all parts of society participate in landscape-related decisions in an appropriate and fair way? And what do sustainable landscapes look like?
Assessing, planning and sustainably developing landscapes has political and social dimensions. It involves conflict as well as issues of democracy, equity, participation, and power. Therefore, the field of 'Landscape Planning and Communication' addresses social science aspects of planning and decision-making processes in the field of landscape planning, spatial development and nature conservation.
At present, the department's research and teaching activities focus on the following areas:
Participation and communication processes in planning, for example with regard to the use of digital methods, the reactivation of communal landscape planning, the handling of profound conflicts as well as the handling of populist currents in topics such as the energy transition.
Socio-ecological transformations and global justice in the context of nature conservation and landscape development; implications for the self-perceptions of planning actors
Competing concepts in nature conservation and landscape management, e.g. in the context of controversies about the use of economic concepts such as 'ecosystem services' and 'natural capital'.
The department is also responsible for the undergraduate GIS teaching of the 06 department.

For scientific employees it is essential to prepare a qualification thesis. This can be - depending on the already existing qualification - a dissertation (doctoral thesis) or a post-doctoral thesis.
At the Department of Landscape Planning and Communication, the supervision of doctoral and postdoctoral students is taken very seriously. We support you in narrowing down the topic and the research questions, in the choice of methods and much more. We also encourage participation in scientific conferences and doctoral networks.

All qualification theses of scientific staff members are supervised by Prof. Leibenath, who usually also acts as first examiner.
