Mission statement

The Department of Economics (FB 07) at the University of Kassel consists of 4 institutes:

  • Institute for Vocational Education (IBB),
  • Institute of Management and Business Studies (IBWL),
  • Institute of Economics (IVWL),
  • Institute of Business Law (IWR).

A dedicated team with top-class professors as well as scientific and administrative staff serves approximately 7,000 students. We accompany students through their studies in economics or law and provide them with a versatile spectrum of knowledge as a basis for a successful future in science, research or practice.

With 20 degree programmes - 6 bachelor's, 11 master's and 2 postgraduate degrees as well as one state examination - we offer an attractive, comprehensive range of courses that are characterized by interdisciplinarity, internationality and modernity in course content and didactics. We deliver excellent academic education at the cutting edge of our disciplines.

Excellence in research and teaching guides our thinking and actions. The interdisciplinary and future-oriented research profile of our department focuses on four main research areas: Economic Behavior and Governance (EB&Go), Digital Transformation (DITRA), Skills Acquisition & Entrepreneurship (KENT), and Sustainability, Energy and Environment (NEU). Closely linked to the overarching research profile of the University of Kassel, we develop innovative collaborative research initiatives and maintain strategic partnerships with leading (inter-) national research institutes. We intensively address the challenges of the future and ensure that our research has a substantial impact on business, education and policy. In our department, significant contributions are made to academic discourse on an international level.

By interacting in a continuous exchange with companies, public administration and vocational schools, we pursue an integrative approach to research and teaching.

We place great emphasis on structured support for young researchers, which aims to improve the academic qualifications and career opportunities of our doctoral students, postdocs and postdoctoral researchers. In doing so, we are guided by international standards and developments in the economic sciences.

It is a source of pride for us to hold a leading position in the internationalization of our university. Our department creates a variety of opportunities for lively international exchange between students and researchers.

We act sustainably and fulfill our responsibility towards future generations in our achievements.

We establish an inspiring working environment that attracts excellent scientists and students from all over the world. The diversity of our employees and students with their different skills and talents (diversity) is an opportunity and enrichment for us. Furthermore, we see the equality of women and men as a matter of course.
