Our laboratories are taking shape

The Laboratory Astrophysics Group has set up two new laboratories in a 100-square-meter space: the Laser Jet Laboratory and the Terahertz Laboratory. The photo gallery shows the development of the laboratories in reverse chronological order.

Observation time on the 30-meter IRAM telescope in Spain

In the spring of 2013, as well as in May and August 2016, we conducted observation campaigns at the IRAM telescope (Institute for Radio Astronomy in the Millimeter Wave Range) in the Sierra Nevada, Spain. We searched for hydrogen peroxide (HOOH) and its deuterated form (HOOD), which are involved in the formation of water in the interstellar medium.
The IRAM telescope, with a diameter of 30 meters and a surface precision of 55 micrometers (equivalent to the thickness of a human hair), is one of the largest and most sensitive radio telescopes for the millimeter-wave range. It is located on a mountain in southern Spain at an altitude of 2,850 meters, which ensures good atmospheric conditions for astronomical observations.

Field Trip to the Effelsberg Telescope in April 2013

In April 2013, the Laboratory Astrophysics Division, together with students, took a field trip to the radio telescope in Effelsberg in the Eifel region. With a diameter of 100 meters, the Effelsberg Telescope is one of the world’s largest fully movable radio telescopes.
