Seed cultivation course: Introduction to practical seed production

The course provides participants with the basics for propagating vegetable crops independently and maintaining pure varieties. In addition, this practical introduction can be a good supplement to the lectures onorganic plant breeding and serves as a stimulus for further involvement with professional organic seed cultivation.

Contents & topics:

• Theoretical introduction to seed production
• Basics for pure variety propagation: knowledge of pollination conditions, carrying out assessments and selections using practical examples
• Practicing seed quality, seed preparation and cleaning using practical examples
• Under expert supervision, participants work independently in small groups to care for a vegetable crop in small beds until the seeds are ripe in the teaching and learning garden at the tropical greenhouse
• Excursion to an organic seed farm for insights into professional organic seed production

Limitation of participants: 16

Proof of performance: Compulsory attendance at all group meetings and independent cultivation of the crops with written documentation
