INCHER Research Colloquium: Prof. Dr. Emanuel Kulczycki speaks about "Questionable publishing: How research evaluation systems shape global knowledge inequalities"

Dr. Emanuel Kulczycki is head of the “Research System and Science Dynamics” department at the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW) in Berlin and Full Professor of Science Studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. His research focuses on scholarly communication, research evaluation systems, and scientometrics.

At this colloqium session he will present results from his ongoing, already and soon to be published research.

Authors Abstract:

This presentation argues that questionable and predatory publishing is not an anomaly of publishing practices but a structural outcome of metric-driven research evaluation systems and the dynamics of the evaluation game. Drawing on empirical studies of citation patterns, conference participation, and blacklist effects, it shows how these dynamics operate in practice. It introduces the concept of mislocated centers of scholarly communication to explain how peripheral venues come to appear “center-like,” while sustaining weak editorial standards and reproducing global knowledge inequalities.

Venue: INCHER, University of Kassel, Mönchebergstr. 17, room 3106
