Social media communication can help to support species that need protection measures

Congratulation on your latest publication Tuan Nguyen, Maarten Vanhove, Stephan Bruns & Robert Malina. You show how social media can help zoos deal with taxonomic bias in public attention.

The article “The hidden majority: Zoos can simultaneously engage public interest and curb taxonomic bias on social media communication” indicates that although taxonomic bias persists in both zoo communication and public engagement, the widespread interest in multiple species groups suggests that zoos could expand the diversity of species they feature online without diminishing – and perhaps even improving – overall engagement. These findings may help reduce the emphasis on traditionally charismatic species and support a more taxonomically diverse approach to species-related content on social media.
