DaKS (Research Data Repository)

1. basic information

Field of application

Long-term storage and publication of research data

Who is it suitable for?

Researchers, lecturers and students at the University of Kassel; external project partners in the context of joint projects

Responsibility

Kassel University Library, Research Data Service / Publication Services

2. brief description

Description

DaKS is the institutional repository of the University of Kassel for research data. DaKS offers the structured storage of research data with their description (metadata), long-term storage of at least 10 years in accordance with the FAIR principles and - if desired - publication with a DOI.

Alternatives

Disciplinary repositories, Zenodo, data centers

3. main functions

Functions

  • Publication of research data
Completed datasets can be published in DaKS in a citable form.
  • Storage of research data
Completed datasets that are not to be freely published can be stored in DaKS (in accordance with good scientific practice) and made available in a targeted manner, for example to a specific group of people or on request.
  • Versioning
DaKS enables the creation of new versions and makes the relationship to previous versions transparent.
  • DOI allocation
Datasets with at least public metadata are given a persistent identifier (DOI) with which they can be permanently accessed and cited.

4th deployment scenario

Practical examples

  • A research team archives and publishes data sets from a completed project.
  • A doctoral student archives doctoral-related data in accordance with good scientific practice and decides who should have access to it.
  • A project has compiled its research results on a website. The content of the website is saved and made available in DaKS in the long term, even if the website has to be shut down.
  • A postdoc publishes a paper and stores the associated data in DaKS. The paper and data are linked to each other via their respective DOI so that they can be read by humans and machines.
  • A scientist analyzes her data with self-written code. She publishes smaller snippets of code together with the data in DaKS. More extensive code is stored in GitLab and is linked in the metadata of the corresponding DaKS data publication.
