GitLab (version control / software development)

1. basic information

Field of application

GitLab is used for the management, versioning and joint editing of files and projects. In particular, it supports software development, documentation and project organization.

Who is it suitable for?

The service is open to students, teachers and academic and technical staff who want to organize their work processes efficiently and collaboratively.

Responsibility

The IT Service Center is responsible for the operation, maintenance and user support of the GitLab service.

2. brief description

Description

GitLab provides a web-based environment for the management of Git repositories, including wikis, discussion forums and project management tools. It enables structured versioning of files, supports team collaboration and simplifies the management of source texts and other project-related content.

Alternatives

External platforms such as GitHub or Bitbucket can be used as an alternative. Internal university alternatives are not currently planned.

3. main functions

Functions

  • Project management: Management of individual projects including repository, wiki and discussion platform.

  • Versioning of files: Structured and traceable storage of changes using Git.

  • Collaboration in teams: Creation of groups and assignment of differentiated access rights to projects.

  • GitLab Pages: Possibility to publish static websites directly from projects (in compliance with legal requirements such as imprint and privacy policy).

  • Synchronization: Simple synchronization of local devices with the server via common Git clients.

4th deployment scenario

Practical examples

A student project team develops a software solution together and uses GitLab for versioning and task coordination.

5. technical requirements

Prerequisites

A current web browser is required for access. To work with Git repositories, we recommend installing a Git client on the local device.

6. use and access

Account and login

The service is available to all university members with a valid UniAccount. Registration takes place via central authentication. If access authorization is lost, personal projects are deleted after twelve months.

9. special notes (data protection, terms of use)

Data protection and security

The transfer of data between end devices and the server is encrypted. The data itself is stored unencrypted on access-restricted systems. Regular backups ensure data security. The service is suitable for data with normal protection requirements.

Legal notices and license information

Private use of the service is not permitted. Use is subject to the IT user regulations. The respective project managers are responsible for the content and its legal security. We reserve the right to make changes to the terms of use.
