Goto server (web address redirection)

The Goto server enables the creation of short, customizable URLs that redirect to existing university websites.

Employees who manage the website of a department, institute or other institution can use this service.

The IT Service Center is responsible for the provision and technical support of the Goto server.

With the Goto server, existing, often long and confusing web addresses can be converted into short and easy-to-remember links. These short links make it easier to communicate URLs, for example in flyers, presentations or e-mails. The shortened web address can be used for the following systems:

• editor.signavio.com
• hds.hebis.de
• idp.hebis.de
• sharepoint.uni-kassel.de
• uni-kassel.cloud.panopto.eu
• uni-kassel.quickverleih.de
• zevedi.de

No alternative services for URL shortening are available within the university. External URL shorteners are not recommended for data protection and security reasons.

• Shortening of URLs: Creation of compact, user-friendly links to existing websites.
• Customizable target addresses: Possibility to customize the name of the short URL.
• QR codes: A suitable QR code is automatically generated for you for each short link created. This offers you several advantages:
  • easy sharing of links to print materials or presentations
  • Quick accessibility for mobile users
  • Legally unproblematic, as the codes run exclusively via our own servers

Important restriction:
If an address already exists directly at www.uni-kassel.de/kuerzel, this abbreviation can no longer be used for Go forwarding. Example: www.uni-kassel.de/go/its is not possible because www.uni-kassel.de/its already exists.

Changing the page title in Typo3:
If you change the title of a web page, the Go links become invalid and must be corrected. To avoid this problem, you can store the ID of the page in the Goto server instead of the speaking web address. We will be happy to advise you in the Typo3 consultation on how to proceed.

• An institute would like to place a clear URL on a flyer and uses a go-link to the institute's homepage for this purpose.

• A series of events receives a short URL for the registration pages for each event to facilitate distribution in newsletters and social media.

A current web browser is sufficient for use. A university account is required to create a short link.

Only employees who are responsible for the web presence of their institution are authorized to access it. Administration takes place via the Goto server at the address goto.uni-kassel.de.

No explicit training courses are offered.

The short links created refer exclusively to university-internal or controlled pages. Anonymous or improper use is prevented by a central user administration.

Use is subject to the IT user regulations. Only legally unobjectionable content may be linked. Information on the terms of use can be found on the URL redirection information page.
