Matlab (numerical calculations / simulation)

1. basic information

Field of application

MATLAB is used for numerical mathematics, simulation, data analysis and visualization. The software is used in research, teaching and development - particularly in engineering, natural sciences, economics and computer science.

Who is it suitable for?

MATLAB is available to anyone with a UniAccount - especially students, lecturers and researchers who work with complex numerical calculations, simulations or data-based models.

Responsibility

The provision of the license and the organizational administration is carried out by the IT Service Center. The users themselves are responsible for the use of the content.

2. brief description

Description

MATLAB (Matrix Laboratory) is a highly developed software environment for mathematical modeling, data processing and programming. It is based on a proprietary scripting language and supports numerous scientific and technical fields of application. MATLAB, including many toolboxes, can be used via the campus license.

Alternatives

Open source alternatives such as GNU Octave or Python with libraries such as NumPy, SciPy and Matplotlib are available for some areas of application. However, these are not fully compatible with MATLAB and may require some training.

3. main functions

Functions

  • Numerical calculation and linear algebra
Ideal for matrix operations, systems of equations, differential equations and numerical optimization.

  • Scripting and programming environment
MATLAB includes its own programming language with development environment (editor, debugger, variable browser).

  • Data analysis and visualization
Extensive functions for data processing, statistical analysis and graphical representation.

  • Toolboxes for special applications
E.g. for signal processing, image processing.E.g. for signal processing, image processing, machine learning, control design, robotics and many other specialist areas.

  • Integration and expandability
Interfaces to C/C++, Java, Python and Simulink; extensive documentation and online resources.

4th deployment scenario

Practical examples

  • In an engineering project, a control loop is modeled and simulated.

  • A research group evaluates experimental data using statistical methods and creates illustrative diagrams in MATLAB.

  • Students work on numerical exercises, develop algorithms and carry out simulations.

5. technical requirements

Prerequisites

  • Windows, macOS or Linux (system requirements depend on MATLAB version)

  • Installed version of MATLAB (local or via network drive), download at https://ftp.uni-kassel.de/pub/uni-kassel/matlab/

  • For licensing: Internet connection for activation or use of the license server

6. use and access

Account and login

The software is available via a campus license. Installation packages and license information can be found under"Download & Activation".

To use the software, you can log in via SSO directly on the manufacturer's website [external].

If a pool room is operated, the license codes for the pool room computers can be issued. To do this, please contact Lizenzmanagement[at]uni-kassel[dot]de. Please be sure to include the IP address and host name as well as the installed software version.

7. support and contact

Contact and support times

8. instructions and further links

Training

No training courses are currently offered. However, the MathWorks website offers free tutorials, documentation and learning videos to get you started.

9. special notes (data protection, terms of use)

Data protection and security

The software is operated locally. Users are responsible for handling project-related or personal data in compliance with data protection regulations. License activation requires a connection to the central license server or a single-user license.

Legal notices and license information

MATLAB may only be used within the scope of the campus license for study, teaching and research at the university. Commercial use is not permitted. The license may only be used by persons with a UniAccount.
