Moodle (learning management system)
Overview
1. basic information
Moodle is the central learning platform of the University of Kassel. It is used in all departments for teaching and studying. Moodle offers the possibility of providing scripts, graphics or links, as well as supporting communication with and among students and designing complex interactive learning scenarios.
For all teachers and students at the University of Kassel.

Both the task of advising and supporting teachers in the design of their Moodle courses and the task of the didactic-pedagogical conception and functional design of the Moodle learning platform are the responsibility of the Teaching Service Center. This includes the selection, evaluation and configuration of suitable plugins and functions in accordance with the teaching and learning objectives as well as the co-design and user guidance. The aim is to create a learning environment that is conducive to learning, low in barriers and user-friendly. The technical implementation (e.g. server operation, security updates) is carried out by ITS. The content and didactic requirements are communicated in close coordination.
For further questions and didactic advice on e-learning, blended learning and the use of Moodle, please contact the colleagues in the Teaching Service Center directly (alternatively or in addition, contact persons with contact details).
2. brief description
Moodle is a globally distributed learning management system (LMS) that is used for blended learning, online teaching and digital self-study phases. At the University of Kassel, Moodle is hosted centrally and made available for all courses. Lecturers can design individual courses, upload materials and set up interactive learning activities.
3. main functions
- Course management and design
Teachers can use different layouts to flexibly design courses and structure them according to their own teaching needs. Teachers can give students targeted access to course content, tasks and other course functions. - Material provision
Upload of scripts, presentations, videos, external links and worksheets is possible. - Create interactive and multimedia content
H5P, lessons and other content elements can be used to create and reuse multimedia and interactive content with Moodle. - Interactive learning activities
Tasks can be created with different submission options, tests can be provided with automatic evaluation and automatic feedback, individual learning paths can be created and, last but not least, students can create glossaries and wikis together, for example. - Communication and feedback
Teachers can send announcements to all students, use forums to exchange ideas with students, enable the chat function in the protected course room or peer feedback among students. - Participation and performance tracking
Tests, assignments and assessments can be made available throughout the semester, e.g. at the end of teaching units and for the activation of new teaching units.
4th deployment scenario
- One lecturer provides seminar materials to prepare for the next session via Moodle, offers self-tests to prepare for exams and moderates discussions on topics from her seminar in the forum.
- In one lecture, weekly exercise sheets are made available as tasks via Moodle, which are solved by students and then uploaded for correction. The team of lecturers and tutors corrects the solutions and provides feedback and an assessment to the respective students.
- A tutorial uses Moodle to collect feedback on student short presentations and to disseminate organizational information.
- For a student project, students create a project plan in groups. The groups give each other peer feedback in Moodle. The teacher supervises the project work of the student groups, which is documented in a wiki in Moodle. At the end, the students create a project video with Panopto, which is submitted in Moodle as coursework and assessed by the teacher.
