VDI - Virtual Desktop Environment (remote workstation)

1. basic information

Field of application

The VDI enables access to standardized virtual applications and complete Windows working environments regardless of location and end device.

It is suitable for working from home, for providing highly available standardized working environments and much more.

Who is it suitable for?

The VDI is available to all persons with a UniAccount - i.e. students, teaching staff and employees.

Responsibility

Provision and administration is carried out by the IT Service Center.

2. brief description

Description

Centrally managed Windows work environments and virtual applications are made available to students and employees of the University of Kassel via the VDI. It is therefore not necessary to install and administer the local end device. The virtual work environments provide access to specific applications required for the respective activity as well as to internal resources such as network drives. Everything is offered via a central university computer center.

Alternatives

As an alternative to the VDI, all end devices to be used can be installed and configured locally. For specific applications, it would have to be checked whether a local installation is possible or whether an application server can be accessed.

3. main functions

Functions

  • Access to software: Provision of a variety of standard programs (Office applications) as well as specific applications for specialist areas or institutes, for example.

  • Central administration: Work environments offer standardized configurations and central updates, which ensures stability and security.

  • Device-independent use: Can be used from various end devices with different operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS).

4th deployment scenario

Practical examples

  • Students can take part in seminars or courses on their own devices via the VDI and use examination software without having to install it locally.
  • Teachers can offer standardized working environments and applications for students. In addition, entire pool rooms can be offered virtually for seminars or exam preparation, for example.
  • Employees can work from home in their familiar working environment, including access to network drives and services without the need for a dedicated, configured end device.
