GeDIS Lab

GeDIS Research Lab is a research space and research programme that aims at engaging with gender and theory in computing and technology design practices. Specifically, it focusses on four thematic clusters, around which the Lab’s activities are structured:

  • Critical Computing;
  • Social Machines;
  • Technological Imaginaries;
  • Conscious Design.

On a methodological as well as conceptual level, the four themes and the activities within them, are informed by gender studies and feminist science and technology studies, as well as by artistic practices as a form of methodological and theoretical exploration. Interdisciplinarity and the connection between theory and practice are thus key not only in research but also in methodology: the activities of the Lab are moving along the theoretical, methodological, socio-cultural-political and practical vectors simultaneously.  The Lab embraces and encourages conceptually and methodologically creative, theoretically rigorous and experimental approaches in cutting-edge technological research and design.

The graphic lists: Gender Studies and Feminist STS as influence. Art as Research as influence; Critical Computing, Social Machines, Conscious Design, Technological Imaginaries intersecting. The Lab is at the intersection as Exchange Hub, Network, Productive Physical Space. It is concerned with theoretical, practical, socio-cultural-political, and methodological issues.
Gender/Diversity in Informatics Systems Lab Structure

Our goal is to provide space for interdisciplinary encounters and coalitions that have potential to connect different research and practice communities in Kassel University and outside of it. We aspire to work closely with other departments and faculties in the University, as well as with the arts community, and practitioners of computing. We hope that the Lab will provide both a conceptual and a physical space for alternative modes of experimenting and learning.

The GeDIS Lab organises seminars, workshops, open events, as well as carries out research projects, publishes position papers and runs the research blog "Engines of Difference". In the future the Lab is expected to host a residency programme. For more information, please see Lab Activities
