The Language Center'sTandem program brings students together who want to learn each other's native languages - free of charge, flexibly and on an equal footing.
The principle: give and take
Two people with different mother tongues form a team. They meet regularly (about once a week) and divide their time equally: One hour is spoken in one language, the other hour in the other language.
Your advantages
- Authentic learning: You decide the topics and learn the language as it is actually spoken.
- Cultural exchange: You learn a lot about the country and its people and make new friends.
- Autonomy: You decide for yourself which skills (speaking, listening, writing) you want to improve.
- Free of charge: The program is a free service for students at the University of Kassel.
Success factors for your tandem
- Neutral start: Meet in a neutral place at the beginning (e.g. campus or café).
- Fair time allocation: Make sure that both languages are given equal time.
- Patience & error culture: You are both learners and teachers at the same time. Correct each other constructively without slowing down the flow of conversation.
- Variety: Use different places (cinema, cooking, library) to keep learning lively.
