What is UNIcert®?

UNIcert® is a seal of quality for the training, testing and certification of foreign language skills that is relevant to aspiring graduates and academics.

The UNIcert® foreign language training and certificate system is based on a general agreement between German higher education institutions. This contributes to greater standardisation of the practice of certifying foreign language skills in higher education, leading to a certificate accepted outside universities as proof of corresponding foreign language skills. The most important criteria for UNIcert® foreign language training are a curriculum relevant to students and an action-oriented approach.

Aims of the UNIcert® Foreign Language Training:

  1. To achieve the ability to cope with university-related language situations as they are expected in the context of studying at a German university or at a university in the target language country; this includes familiarity with intercultural problems and the target country’s cultural realities.
  2. To provide preparation for the language requirements of corresponding academic professions.
  3. To appropriately introduce specific terminology from academic and scientific fields.

The UNIcert® certificate can be obtained as an additional qualification alongside one’s studies.
The multilingual certificate provides detailed information on areas of competence; it enables comparability with other foreign language certifications corresponding to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and demonstrates that students can meet the requirements of studying in an international context.
