New MPO 2023: Information and change form

The teacher training course in Hesse concludes with a state examination. The legal basis for the first state examination is the Hessian Teacher Training Act (HLbG) and the associated implementing ordinance (HLbGDV). The Hessian Teacher Training Act also provides the legal framework for the structure of teacher training courses at teacher training colleges in Hesse.

In order to integrate the changes resulting from the amendment to the law into our teacher training courses, all module examination regulations have been revised accordingly. These new teacher examination regulations came into force in the winter semester 2023/2024 and all students who started their teacher training course at the University of Kassel in the winter semester 2023/2024 or later have already been enrolled in these new module examination regulations and are studying according to them.

All students enrolled in higher semesters before the winter semester 2023/2024 can switch to the reformed module examination regulations at their own request. However, it is up to you whether you make this change. In principle, you can continue to complete your studies in your current examination regulations (but no later than 2032).

• The most extensive changes to the structure of the degree course are probably for the primary school teaching degree. The so-called 'long subject' with 50 credit points has been introduced here. This is studied together with two so-called 'short subjects' (each worth 35 credit points) and the educational and social science core course (60 credit points). Students can choose whether they want to study one of the two compulsory subjects German or Mathematics as a long subject or the third subject of their choice. There is one exception here: if music, art or sport is taken as the third subject, this is the compulsory long subject.
• With the introduction of the practical semester, the practical phases have changed significantly. All teacher training students must also complete a work placement, but the orientation placement is no longer required.
• Key and cross-cutting topics, such as education for sustainable development, inclusion, media education and digitalization or professional orientation, have been anchored in all teacher training courses.
• A mandatory portfolio was introduced across all phases of teacher training.

For all students who started their teacher training course at the University of Kassel before the winter semester 2023/2024, the module examination regulations according to which they are currently studying will continue to apply for the time being. These "old" examination regulations will also remain in force for a few more years - but until 2032 at the latest - so that all students can complete their studies according to the "old" examination regulations up to this point. As time goes on, however, it is to be expected that the range of courses on offer and the associated options will be reduced.

Students who have started their teacher training course at the University of Kassel from the winter semester 2023/2024 or later will automatically be enrolled in the new teacher training examination regulations.

In principle, any student teacher can switch to the new examination regulations if they wish. If you are already close to completing your studies, such a change generally makes little sense. If, on the other hand, you are still at the beginning of your studies and have not yet completed your practical phases, a change may offer more flexibility for the course of your studies. In particular, if you already anticipate longer interruptions to your studies, e.g. due to parental leave or similar, or a significantly reduced pace of study, a change to the new module examination regulations is recommended.

Before switching to the new teacher examination regulations, it is advisable to take advantage of the advice offered by the Teacher Education Student Advisory Service at the Center for Teacher Education.

• The application to change the module examination regulations can always be submitted at the end of a semester with validity from the next semester. This means that the examination regulations from January 30, 2023 (including all amended regulations) apply from the start of the next semester. The prerequisite for this is successful re-registration for the next semester.
• The application period is between February 15 and March 15 for a change to the summer semester and between August 15 and September 15 for a change to the winter semester.
• A change to the new module examination regulations is only possible if it is applied for in all sub-courses of the teacher training program. It is not possible to change the module examination regulations in individual subjects.
• If you change to the new module examination regulations, you will be enrolled in the extension subjects in accordance with the degree program, i.e. if you change, you must decide which are your regular teaching subjects and which subjects you are also studying with the aim of obtaining the extension examination. The following applies to the teaching degree for elementary school: the long subjects art, sport and music cannot be studied as extension subjects.
