General information
The Kassel Examination Office of the Hessian Teachers' Academy holds the first state examination twice a year, in spring and fall.
You can always base your timing on the previous examination campaigns, and the preparatory service in Hesse begins on November 1 and May 1 of each year.
On the website of the Kassel Examination Office , you will find dates and deadlines, information on the required documents for the First State Examination, and contact persons.
Shortly before the admission deadline for each intake, you must have completed your degree program, passed your WHA (academic thesis), and submitted proof of completion of your internship.
You choose in which of your subjects or the core study program you would like to write the WHA (academic term paper). The period for writing the paper is twelve weeks. The number of pages should not be less than 60. Information on the WHA and the required documents can be found on the website of the Kassel examination center.
In Art and Music, it is possible to complete a practical artistic assignment.
Please allow sufficient time for possible postage, correction time and time to discuss the topic.
You will find a list of the examinations to be taken on the website of the Kassel examination center. The respective procedure is described in detail here.
Special feature L1: The written exam is always written in the long subject. In the two short subjects and in the area of elementary school didactics, an oral examination is always taken. (MPO 2023)
Special feature L3: The written exam is always taken in the subjects of art and music.
You have some say in the selection of examiners for all parts of the state examination. The Examination Office of the Teacher Training Academy provides an examiner preference form for this purpose, which you must submit by the deadline. For further information, please contact the Examination Office.
Be sure to contact your preferred examiners well in advance, as in many cases only a limited number of exams can be administered per examiner.
For a written exam, you must always find one person; for an oral exam, you must always find two people. The person supervising the WHA may also administer an exam as part of the First State Examination.
Core Curriculum:
The second examiner for the oral exam is always assigned. You will find a separate form for this on the Core Curriculum page.
During the core curriculum, you will be examined in the subject areas of Education/Psychology and Sociology/Political Science, and you may choose which area you will take the written exam in and which area you will take the oral exam in. Please ensure that the instructors are authorized to administer exams in the respective subject areas.

German:
Registration for both the oral exam and the written exam is done through a Moodle course offered by Department 02.
A total of 12 modules from the degree course are included in the state examination grade (4 per subject in the L2 and L3 degree courses, 3 per subject in the primary school teaching degree course). You will find the modules listed under the "Modules" section of the respective module examination regulations.
The 12 module results are not always simply added together. In the L1 and L3 degree programs, the subjects are weighted. The result of the 12 modules is calculated according to the following key:
- in the L1 degree program, 3 modules from each subject account for 15% of the final grade.
- In the L2 degree program, the 4 modules from both subjects and the core studies account for 20% of the final grade.
- In the L3 degree program, the 4 modules from the two subjects each account for 24% and those from the core studies for 12% of the grade for the First State Examination.
- In the L5 course, 3 modules from the subject account for 12% of the final grade, 3 modules from the core course account for 12% and 6 modules from the sub-course in Special Needs and Inclusive Education account for 36%.
The grade for the First State Examination is made up as follows:
- The modules that are included in the grade make up 60% of the grade for the First State Examination.
- The academic term paper accounts for 10% of the grade for the First State Examination.
- The weighted sum of the grades of the written and oral examinations (for L5 also the grade of the diagnostic term paper) according to § 29 HLbG of the First State Examination counts for 30%.
The conversion of the number of points achieved into a decimal grade for the state examination is based on a table (Appendix 2 to the Hessian Teacher Training Act).
