In view of the current pressing global challenges, the Center for Teacher Education decided to introduce the Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker Prize in 2019. From the perspective of the Center for Teacher Education, Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker's ideas, deep convictions and interdisciplinary commitment are programmatic for the struggle for the future viability of global society.

This prize is awarded annually to two outstanding academic theses in the teacher training program that focus on the following areas:

  • Critical-reflective further development of schools and teacher training and

  • Socially relevant cross-cutting issues in education for sustainable development

Supervisors of academic work in the context of teacher education at the University of Kassel are eligible to nominate candidates for the Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker Prize. The proposed work must be assessed as "very good".

The ZLB appoints a committee of five people to review the proposed theses and determine the two academic theses to be awarded.

The award is documented by a certificate and takes place as part of the teacher graduation ceremony in December of each year. In addition, the award-winning theses are endowed with 500 euros each and published in summarized, edited and reviewed form in the ZLB's "Studium und Forschung" series .
