BiM certificate

BiM stands for Bilingual and Multilingual Teaching and Learning - a specialization certificate for student teachers who wish to expand their skills in dealing with linguistically heterogeneous learning groups.

The certificate is awarded jointly by
Faculty 02 (English/American Studies, Romance Studies) and Faculty 05 (History Didactics).

Aim of the certificate

The program imparts theoretical, didactic and practical skills for teaching in multilingual and bilingual contexts. Students learn to use linguistic diversity as a resource, to develop suitable teaching materials and to accompany multilingual learning processes through research.

Structure of the certificate

The certificate comprises three modules (11 SWS in total):

1st foundation module (4 SWS)
Introduction to theories of bilingual and multilingual learning, multilingualism research, bilingual didactics, learning strategies, digital teaching/learning scenarios.
→ proof of achievement: development report (approx. 10 pages) or written exam/project work

2nd in-depth module (4 SWS)
Research methods, material development, diagnostics, performance assessment and cognitive aspects of bilingual learning.
→ Proof of achievement: Development report (approx. 15 pages) or equivalent examination performance

3rd practical module (3 SWS)
Participation in school or research projects, internships, workshops or teaching at bilingual schools.
→ Proof of achievement: Practical report (1,000-1,500 words)

Requirements for participation

Participation is open to:

• Student teachers at the University of Kassel with a language subject (English, French or Spanish)
• Student teachers of a subject with good language skills (at least B1)
• Teachers and guest students with proven language skills

Completion & certificate

Upon successful completion of all modules, participants receive the official certificate:
"Bilingual and Multilingual Teaching and Learning (BiM)"
- signed by
Prof. Dr. Tanja Angelovska, Prof. Dr. Claudia Schlaak and Prof. Dr. Christine Pflüger.

The certificate is a valuable qualification for use in bilingual, international and multilingual educational contexts.
