Ingrid Baumgärtner holds the chair of Medieval History at the University of Kassel since 1994. She obtained her doctorate from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München with a thesis on Martinus Garatus Laudensis, a jurist from 15th-century Italy. Between 1983 and 1992 she occupied positions as a research assistant and senior lecturer of Medieval History at the University of Augsburg and as a visiting professor at the University of Pittsburgh. She also received a research fellowship at Rome from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). In 1992 she submitted her habilitation thesis on ‘Rome in the 12th and 13th century’ to the University of Augsburg. During the following years she was a Visiting Member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (1992/1993), a Visiting Scholar at the Department of History at Stanford University (1994) and a Research Associate at the Villa I Tatti (The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies) in Florence (2007-2009 and 2011-2016).

Her areas of research include the history of social space and cartography, Gender and Women’s History and Regional History. Geographically, her focus is on North Hesse, Italy and the Mediterranean region. She led the DFG projects “Die Entwicklung des Gerichtsverfahrens in der spätmittelalterlichen Stadt: Lübeck, Köln und Konstanz” (The development of court proceedings in the late medieval city: Lübeck, Cologne and Constance, 2001-2005) and “Karten als Brücken für Welt-Wissen: Westeuropäische und muslimische Kartographie des Mittelalters” (Maps as bridges for knowledge about the world: Western European and Muslim cartography of the Middle Ages, 2007-2012). As part of a team of professors, she headed the DFG Research Training Group 1599 “Dynamiken von Raum und Geschlecht” (Dynamics of space and gender).

Further responsibilities included her tenures as Vice-president of the Centro Tedesco di Studi Veneziani (2009-2013), as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Kassel University (2009-2011) and as Treasurer of the Mediävistenverband (Medievalists’ Society, 2003-2017). She still serves on the Main committee of the Historical Commission for Hesse (since 2001), in the Scientific Board of the Mediävistenverband and in the Academic Committee of the Martin Buber Society of Fellows/Jerusalem.
