Didactics of history

The didactics of history investigates the emergence, dissemination and function of historical ideas in society. The focus is therefore on the manifold forms of historical culture and "historical consciousness" in society. According to Waltraud Schreiber, historical culture is defined as "ways [...] in which history can be present in society [...]."

The focus of the field is a societal one. The focus is therefore on the examination of representations of history in the public sphere, the formation of historical ideas, public history, history in the museum, and the teaching of instructional pragmatic skills.

Another focus of the department is research on and promotion of "multilingual potentials in bilingual history teaching". Together with two other subject didactics (English and French), bilingual seminars are offered at regular intervals, which can also be credited for the BiKa certificate (Bilingual Kassel).
