Where? Hessian State Domain Frankenhausen, 34393 Grebenstein

The grazing season brings with it a number of practical questions for dairy farms: How much do the cows actually eat on the pasture? How can you tell early on whether the supply is right? And what is particularly important at the start of the season to ensure that the animals and the farm get through the next few months well?

In this part of the Frankenhausen Expert Talks, we look at the topic of feeding management during the grazing period from three perspectives.

- Boris Kulig (University of Kassel) presents the possibilities for estimating feed intake during the grazing period and the limitations of the methods.

- Katharina Weihrauch (Bioland-Beratung) will discuss what is important at the start of the grazing season and which points always play a role in the consultation.

- Jan Tewes, a dairy farmer, will report on his everyday farm life, how he organizes feeding during the grazing season and what his experiences have been.

Afterwards, there will be time for exchange and discussion: Which approaches work well in practice? Where are there difficulties? And what can realistically be implemented on your own farm?

Frankenhausen expert talks

The Frankenhausen Expert Talks bring together farmers, advisors and scientists to discuss current issues in organic farming. The meetings take place at the Hessische Staatsdomäne Frankenhausen, the teaching, research and transfer center for organic agriculture at the University of Kassel.

As part of a student project, a short film about the domain was created that is well worth seeing.

At the Hessian state domain Frankenhausen, carrot cultivation is an important pillar of agricultural production. For the marketing initiative "Organic with a face", Ines Reinisch made a film that follows carrot cultivation from sowing to harvesting, storage and marketing.
