Organic and / or rainfed agriculture in the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA region)

Background: In the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA region) traditionally rainfed agriculture is practiced to large extents. More recently, it is side-lined by food imports and irrigated agriculture. The research aims to take stock of policies that relate to rainfed agriculture. An alternative/ additional focus could be the development of organic agriculture in the region and in different countries. Of particular interest are Egypt, Tunisia, Jordan and Morocco.

Aims of the research: To describe recent developments of rainfed agriculture (organic agriculture) in the region and to analyse policies that promote rainfed agriculture in the MENA region. Further, to analyse the policy field, i.e. to understand why policies came about or were lacking in relation to organic farming and/ or rainfed agriculture.
