Attracting women to cycling

Project objective

VELOA starts exactly where little research has been done so far: with women who currently cycle very little or not at all. The project investigates why certain groups of women are underrepresented in cycling and how this situation can be sustainably improved.

It is not only about individual mobility decisions, but also about structural conditions in municipal planning. Women are less represented both as users of bicycles and in planning processes themselves. VELOA aims to systematically incorporate these perspectives and anchor them in cycling planning.

In order to promote an inclusive and equitable transport system, the project specifically considers different groups of women with their respective needs and obstacles - even if the infrastructure is already well developed. On this basis, a model participation process is being developed that enables municipalities to integrate women's interests into the cycling infrastructure on an equal footing, thereby strengthening women's cycling mobility in the long term.

The focus is on three central groups: Women with a history of migration in the second and third generation, women with caring responsibilities and women entrepreneurs. Their different life realities and mobility requirements provide important information on how cycling traffic planning can be made fairer, more inclusive and more sustainable in the future.
