The special issue „University Governance: Impeding or Facilitating Creativity“ of European Review is based on papers presented at a conference which was initiated by the HERCulES group within Academia Europaea and realized in collaboration with the INCHER-Kassel and the German Volkswagen Foundation (VolkswagenStiftung). The conference dealt with the question if more governance does necessarily mean less creativity and vice versa or if rules and regulations can be formulated in order to facilitate and not impede creativity. It took place on 29 and 30 September 2016 in Hannover.

The special isssue edited by Georg Krücken, Lars Engwall and Eric de Corte includes the views of a broad variety of academic researchers dealing with issues of governance and creativity in universities as well as practitioners representing the field of higher education leadership
