Operation of the backup software

The operation of the IBM Storage Protect backup software is standardized. This means that the software offers the same functions and processes regardless of the operating system.

Operating the client software

Command line interface

If the Linux client has problems with Java or if you prefer to work via the command line rather than with the graphical user interface, you can use the dsmc command.

Some examples:

Command

Execution

dsmc query backup "/*"

Lists everything that has been backed up

dsmc qu backup -inactive "/*"

also lists the overwritten

and deleted backed up files

dsmc qu backup "/etc/*"

lists everything backed up below

/etc

dsmc restore -subdir=yes "/home/*"

restores directory /home

dsmc restore -pick -subdir=yes "/home/*"

lists the desired selection so that

you can select specific files

dsmc restore -pick -subdir=yes -inactive "/home/*"

as above with inactive files

dsmc restore -pitdate=01/10/2014 -subdir=yes "/home/*"

restores files and directories under /home that were backed up before 01/10/2014

dsmc query file

lists file systems

dsmc delete file

offers file areas of the backup for deletion so that you can make a targeted selection

Starting the ISP or TSM client (GUI, graphical interface)

Linux

Start a console under XWindow and then enter the command dsmj. You may need to export the corresponding variables in the same shell:
export LANG=en_DE and export LC_ALL=en_DE

Windows

Select

Start menu -> All programs -> IBM Storage Protect -> Backup-Archive -> GUI

or from Windows 10 or Windows Server 2012 via the Windows emblem at the bottom left, then

IBM Storage Protect -> Backup-Archive -> GUI

If you receive an error message here, go back to the client software setup and try again. If this still results in error messages, please read the manufacturer's online documentation [external].

macOS

Start "IBM Storage Protect Tools for Administrators" in the Applications folder.

Set up files and directories for backup

Select the Backup item. There you can specify which files/directories are to be backed up. Please note that the include/exclude specifications are taken into account by the client in the first instance. If you have set an exclude for a directory, this may mean that you can no longer back up subdirectories from this directory manually.

Please note the retention periods.

Restore files and directories (Restore)

Backups can be restored under the item Restore. Please note that files can be overwritten here. You can also use this option to restore files that you have deleted on your computer but previously saved via the backup.

Please note the retention periods for this.
