Portal access

The portal access of the University of Kassel enables you to connect your computers easily and securely to the university's data network via LAN cable. With this access, you no longer need to apply for a separate IP address, and access is exclusively for UniAccount holders. It offers user-friendly access and protects your devices from external threats.

• Easy to use: Thanks to the portal access, it is not necessary to set up or apply for an IP address.
• Access control: Only people with a valid UniAccount can use the computers.
• Basic protection: Portal access offers basic protection against external attacks. Connection attempts by malicious software are automatically blocked.

To connect your computer, make sure that TCP/IP is activated via DHCP (automatic assignment of the IP address, default gateway, etc.).

1. Connect the computer: Your computer is automatically provided with an IP address, which initially only allows access to the local network of the portal access.
2. Activate access: The first time you open a web browser (e.g. Firefox, Internet Explorer), you are automatically redirected to the portal page. Alternatively, you can also access the page at https://ukgate.its.uni-kassel.de.
3. Login: Enter your UniAccount username and password to activate access to the university's entire data network (including the internet).

Please note: If no data is transferred for 15 minutes, access to the local network will be restored. However, you can log in again at any time via the portal page.

• Portal access has its own VLAN/IP subnet. It is not possible to connect computers to other local networks via portal access. This should be taken into account if services are offered for workstation computers that are particularly secure (e.g. a file server).
• Please note that although users can log in to portal access, they cannot reliably log out. Logging out takes place automatically if there is no data traffic for a longer period of time. For this reason, portal access is not ideal for heavily frequented computer pools in which the computers are quickly used by different people. In such environments, it can often happen that the person logged in does not match the person currently sitting at the computer.
• Users require a valid UniAccount.

To request a connection for portal access, send an e-mail to it-servicedesk[at]uni-kassel[dot]de. Please provide the following information:

• Connection number and port of the desired data socket
• Name, e-mail address and telephone number of a contact person for the ITS

You will be notified as soon as the connection is available. If you require additional hardware (e.g. a mini-switch or cable), please enter your requirements in the comments field of the online form with the corresponding cost center.
