Mission statement of university sports

The tasks and objectives of General University Sports (AHS) are diverse and wide-ranging. The AHS promotes and organizes health, recreational and competitive sports for all university members and staff. In addition to specific exercise and relaxation programs, health sports include various educational programs that are sustainably anchored in the users' daily exercise routine. To this end, the AHS offers, among other things, prevention courses in accordance with §20 SGB V, which are an integral part of the offer. The premises provided at the Holländischer Platz and Heinrich-Plett-Straße locations and in Damaschkestraße, in particular the Unifit, offer ideal conditions for this.

University sport stands for health promotion through exercise and relaxation, among other things as a balance to everyday study and work life, in various fields of exercise. The fields of exercise include fit and healthy, fighting and budo sports, ball sports and games, running and endurance sports, dancing and rhythm, gymnastics and movement arts as well as other exercise options in and on the water. The focus of this orientation is broad-based sport.

Through these different approaches to sport, the AHS sees itself not only as a central service provider for exercise and relaxation, but also orients itself in the content of its offers to the educational concept anchored in the mission statement of the University of Kassel. In addition to teaching motor skills, the sports programs also promote the development of cognitive and social-emotional skills. This also provides opportunities outside of subject-specific studies to acquire social skills, which in many areas of work often have a significant influence on future professional biographies as key skills. For these reasons, many students, academic staff below professorship level and guests perceive the AHS as a platform for getting to know each other, so that the offers are often seen as an integration medium for a social (university) community. In addition, the AHS underlines its educational intentions by offering two apprenticeships for the profession of sports and fitness management assistant.

As a partner university of elite sport, competitive sport also has a significance that should not be underestimated. A wide range of competitive activities and the sporting successes of the athletes represent the university and, together with the other activities on offer, contribute significantly to identification with the university. University sport thus performs an important function as a secondary location factor.

Through these tasks, the AHS fulfils the expectations placed on it by the university itself, but also by the users and external (sports) organizations and professional associations - the latter include the adh (Allgemeiner Deutscher Hochschulverband) in particular.
