Students

Students of the University of Kassel who actively participate in the pilot courses (credit acquisition) can borrow a tablet PC from the ITS free of charge for the duration of their participation, usually one semester.

In the summer semester 2019, the following professors* will participate in the project with the following courses:

Prof. Dr. Jan Marco Leimeister, Introduction to Information Science I

Prof. Dr. Heike Blümer, Dagmar Langer, Mario Leck: Use of Tablets in Technical Elementary Education & Technical Phenomena in the Lifeworld of Children: "Automata and Robots"

Daniela Rieß - Mobile Learning / Media Competence Promotion in Language Teaching

FAQ Mobile Learning

The project "mobile learning" serves to develop innovative teaching concepts at the University of Kassel. In the participating pilot courses, it is tested which possibilities there are to offer students further learning accesses and to support context-dependent learning by integrating mobile learning into the course. To this end, selected courses in business informatics, business law and political science will initially be expanded to include elements of mobile learning. This includes electronic learning materials for learning on the go or exercises that are carried out within the courses with the help of the mobile devices, e.g. voting. In order to enable as many interested parties as possible to participate in the project, end devices in the form of iPads and netbooks are loaned to project participants via the IT Service Center of the University of Kassel.

Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that there will be enough devices for all participants. If this is not the case, the decision will be made by lot. Of course, you can also participate in the project with your own laptop/tablet. Those who do not own a laptop can borrow one from ITS.

The conditions for "active participation" are determined by the respective teaching staff. For the course Info 1, you must be enrolled for the tutorials and also participate in them regularly. In addition, you are expected to participate in possible special events as well as evaluations (paper-based or online) within the project. However, you will be informed about such activities by the teaching staff in the courses at an early stage.

The devices are primarily issued to participants of the project and in the associated courses. However, the University of Kassel aims to make it possible for other students to borrow the devices in the coming semesters. Devices that are not needed during the semester can be borrowed via a short-term loan in the ITS. In addition, you have the possibility to apply for the loan of a "normal" laptop at the IT Service Center (see ITS manual).

Yes, your own devices such as laptops and iPads are normally also suitable for project participation. The teaching staff will inform you about specific requirements such as certain recommended software.

Of course, you can decide at any time to no longer participate in the project. However, since the devices are primarily available to participants of the project, we will retract the end device in this case in order to give another student the opportunity to participate in the project, if necessary.

Of course. Participation in the project is not a prerequisite for taking the courses. Students who do not participate in the project but still wish to take one or more of the courses will not suffer any disadvantages as a result.

The equipment must be returned at the end of the semester, the exact date will be given in the respective courses.

If possible, video recordings should only be used via the WLAN of the university or at your home. The video recordings can of course also be accessed via UMTS. However, this can quickly exceed the download volume provided by your provider (each video is approx. 1.5 GB in size). As a result, either the transmission costs would increase or the transmission speed would decrease.

Please first read the operating instructions for the tablet. If this does not help, please contact the ITS Service Hotline (0561 804 5678).

The devices can be borrowed free of charge. However, we strongly recommend that you get yourself a UMTS stick, which will enable you to go online in large parts of Germany.

Yes, for the duration of the loan you can use the device anywhere.

The tablets can all be equipped with UMTS. However, it is up to you to select and conclude an appropriate contract. Keep in mind that you will initially receive the device for the duration of one semester, so the contract should not have a minimum term of one year or similar.

No, such modifications are not permitted.

It is recommended to install the offered updates.

First of all, we expect responsible use, i.e. that you do not surf the Internet or chat during lectures, for example. In addition, please note that your devices should be fully charged in the morning, as there are not enough sockets in the lecture halls for this large number of devices.

You can download the purchased apps via Itunes/Google Play Store at any time and install them on another tablet. Furthermore, the backup function allows you to save your apps and settings and transfer them to your own tablet in case of a purchase.

You can reset the device to factory settings, so all data from the device is deleted.

A connection to the Internet can be established either via the integrated WLAN function or via the UMTS module.

A UniAccount is required to access the university WLAN. After the connection to the university WLAN has been established (select the university WLAN under "Settings -> WiFi"), the login data must be entered.

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a third-generation (3G) mobile communications standard. This allows the tablet to provide mobile Internet access within the UMTS network. However, usage costs are incurred for this.

The costs for using UMTS vary depending on the network operator's selected data tariff.

As of Apple iOS 4.2, this is possible with some printers, and apps are available for Android tablets.

Many of the existing apps have been optimized for smartphones, whose display has a smaller resolution. Therefore, corresponding apps are scaled up on the tablet, which is why the display can be faulty.
