Profil

The thousand years between around 500 and 1500 saw the development of fundamental cultural, religious, linguistic, and governmental/political structures and ways of life. In Kassel, our approach to this period is characterized by diverse methodologies, interdisciplinary openness, and the capacity to engage in international discourses. At the centre of both teaching and research are questions about the semantic dimensions of space, the generation of knowledge, gender relations, and cultures of memory and law, and about categories of perception and the dynamics of exchange in a globalized world. Current research projects are focused on the history of cartography, space and knowledge, on legal cultures, and on gender studies in Mediterranean and Central Europe. The department is notable for its international contacts, particularly with Italy and Israel, third-party funding for early career academics, and science communication with the public.
