Project objective
The aim of the SALIX AFS model and demonstration project is to establish and sustainably produce suitable willow types with specific material and growth characteristics in multifunctional agroforestry systems (AFS). The willow serves as a high-quality raw material in two ways: The willow wood is used for industrial processing to produce endless willow wood thread and willow wood textile. Salicylates for medicine and cosmetics are extracted from the willow bark. The entire added value of willow wood is analyzed for each player, from cultivation to the highly refined product. The annual harvest of willow guarantees secure income for the farmer in the short term and thus increases the incentive for realization in practice.

Project homepage
Several innovative approaches in the SALIX AFS project are particularly noteworthy: The cultivation of shrub willows in agroforestry systems means that there is little or no competition for land between food production and the production of renewable raw materials. Harvesting the willow rods in the year of establishment enables immediate value creation through the woody component, which represents a potentially very interesting economic innovation compared to other Central European agroforestry systems. The use of the traditional material willow wood as a solid wood thread and the innovative approach through weaving and braiding is also predestined for lightweight construction and offers a completely new appearance of the end product.
