PhD topic: Economic impacts of mining sector in Zaamar soum, Tuv province for the pastoral herder households
Summary: Mining is an important sector, contributing 29% to Mongolia’s GDP. One of the regions where mining activities are concentrated is Zaamar soum in Tuv province. Mining has been conducted in Zaamar soum for over 100 years. The area is also home to pastoral households who have traditionally relied on livestock herding throughout the four seasons for their livelihoods. However, resulting from mining activities land use has changed, and pastureland scarcity has increased, making it more difficult for herders to sustain traditional livestock practices. At the same time, mining activities contribute to the household income of the herders by creating demand for livestock products, particularly through the purchase of meat and dairy products from the herders, thereby providing additional income opportunities. Consequently, the livelihoods and income sources of the herders have been undergoing significant changes. The goal of the study is to assess how changes in land use affect the livelihoods of pastoral households and to understand the perceptions of the herders regarding mining activities and their impacts.
