Sophos XDR Cybersecurity Campus (virus scanner)

Sophos XDR (Extended Detection and Response) is used to protect end devices used for business purposes within the university. The software enables centralized management and offers comprehensive security functions against malware, ransomware and other threats.

Sophos XDR is aimed at departments and central institutions that want to secure their IT infrastructure centrally. It is used exclusively via centrally managed instances; individual installation on private or individual business devices is not intended.

Setting up and managing Sophos Central instances is the responsibility of the respective departments or central facilities. The IT Service Center provides support with deployment and coordination.

Sophos XDR provides a cloud-based security solution that enables endpoints to be centrally monitored and protected. Through integration with Sophos Central, administrators can manage security policies consistently and effectively detect and remediate threats.

For devices that are not integrated into a Sophos Central instance, we recommend using the integrated protection functions of the operating system, such as Windows Defender.

• Central management: Enables the control and monitoring of all connected end devices via a central interface.
• Threat detection: Identifies and blocks malware, ransomware and other security risks in real time.
• Manual scans: Provides the ability to perform targeted security scans on individual devices.
• Reporting: Creates detailed reports on security events and system statuses.

• Departmental infrastructure: A department integrates all its workstations into a Sophos Central instance to ensure uniform security policies and perform centralized updates.
• Central institution: The university library uses Sophos XDR to protect public computer workstations from potential threats and to increase IT security for users.

The use of Sophos XDR requires the establishment of a Sophos Central instance by the respective institution or department. Individual devices must be integrated into this instance.

Employees with a UniAccount can contact the IT Service Center to request a Sophos Central instance for their institution. Access to specific installation files and instructions is possible after logging in with the UniAccount.

Sophos XDR is used in accordance with the applicable data protection regulations. The central administration enables data protection-compliant handling of security events and minimizes risks from decentralized installations.

The framework agreement for Sophos XDR applies to Hessian universities and is valid from 01.11.2022 to 31.10.2025. Licensing is carried out exclusively via central instances; individual licensing to individual users is not provided for.
