Intercultural communication

1. Free Courses

• Once you have selected your preferred language and your status or department during the registration process, the system will indicate whether the course is free or requires a fee.
• Free spots are limited—registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Our tip: Take the placement test early so that you’ll already have the registration code required for enrollment by the time registration opens. You can find more information on the respective pages for the language you’ve selected.
• Only courses listed under “Sponsored Seats” or “Studium International” are free of charge. You will not receive an invoice for these courses.
  • Centrally funded courses in German, English, French, and Spanish (“Patenplatz” program): In the languages listed, one course per semester can be booked free of charge through the “Patenplatz” program, up to a maximum of two over the course of your degree program (courses from the “Studium International” section can be booked in addition).
  • Department-funded courses (“Studium International” program): Many departments, in collaboration with the Language Center, fund customized courses for their students, particularly in the area of specialized language courses.

2. Course Fees

If a course requires a fee, the amount is based on:

• the number of class sessions,
• the group size,
• your status (student, Employee, or external participant).

External participants generally pay a higher fee.

3. Payment of Fees

• You will receive the invoice by email approximately 4 to 6 weeks after the course begins.
• Please transfer the amount, citing the invoice number.

Course start and dates

• The courses usually start one to two weeks after the official start of lectures at the University of Kassel.
• Other dates will be announced.
• Some courses are offered as compact courses during the lecture-free period.
• Current information and dates can be found in the "News" section.

Compulsory attendance for online courses

• The same attendance requirements apply as for face-to-face courses.
• "Attendance" for online courses means active participation with video and audio.

Access data for online courses

• You will receive your access data at least four hours before the course starts.
• They will be sent to the e-mail address you provided when registering.

Deregistration from the course

• You can withdraw from the course by clicking on the "Request to withdraw from course" button .

Examination procedure

• Final examinations usually take place in the last or penultimate course session.
• Unless otherwise announced:
  • The written exam is conducted in person.
  • The oral exam takes place online in a protected Zoom meeting.
• Separate registration is not required.
  • Exception: UNIcert® III examinations or re-examinations.

1 Course offer and costs

• You can take part in most of the regular courses on offer.
• Most courses are subject to a fee.
• The same fees apply for employees as for students.
• Special courses exclusively for employees are marked separately.
• As a rule, employees attend classes together with students.

If you are attending as part of a professional development course and your line manager is covering the costs, please note that

• Written confirmation must be received by e-mail before the course begins.
• Please send this confirmation to: sz@uni-kassel.de.
• If the confirmation is not received on time, you will be invoiced for the course fee in person.

How to register:

1. Go to the "Language and key qualifications" section.
2. Select the desired language.
3. Follow the registration process.
4. Enter "Employee" as your status.
