Scientific language competencies in the university context: demanding, evaluating - but how to promote?

16 and 17 January 2014

Organization: Tanja Fohr, M.A./ StR.i.H., FB 02, Fachgebiet DaFZ                                          Speakers: Dr. Marina Adams, Dr. Ulrike Arras, Heike Brandl, Prof. Dr. Christian Fandrych, Prof. Dr. Helmuth Feilke, Dr. Gabriele Graefen, Ute Koithan, Dr. Martin Steinseifer

The conference, with its lectures and discussions, is intended not only to make a contribution to the language policy debate on the subject of scientific language, but also to show possibilities for promoting scientific language competence on the basis of research results and examples from teaching practice.
Taking this as an occasion, the conference sets itself several goals: The current debate about the role of German as a language of science in comparison to English forms the starting point for various questions concerning the requirements of scientific language and the promotion of scientific language competence. Furthermore, it is also about the extent to which the required scientific language competencies are measured, for example, by means of tests such as the TestDaF and the DSH.The gap between the expected and the actually existing scientific language competencies of German and international students at German universities is often lamented.

The exchange and discussion of measures and projects should contribute to the networking of higher education, state schools and private educational institutions.

In order to enable a broader public to participate in discussions around the topic , we have created a BLOG has been set up. We would be pleased if you enrich this forum with your own contributions.
