Dissertation project

The dissertation project focuses on the world map of the Venetian Camaldolese monk Fra Mauro, completed in 1459. The aim is to work out the details of the conception of Africa in the context of the history of imagination, giving particular weight to the questions of the recording and structuring of space and its order. The analysis will be carried out in comparison with narrative and other pictorial sources and will also take into account Islamic mappings of Africa in the 15th century. In doing so, the dissertation limits itself to the extremely dynamic image of Africa in the 15th century, in which the exploration of Africa and the exchange with its inhabitants extended far south and there was an increased interest in this part of the world, before the focus of cartographers and navigators shifted to America with the expansion of the European world.
