DE:FORESTATION, A RESOURCE MANAGEMENT GAME

The department of Art and Economies of documenta Institut invites artists, students of the University of Kassel, and anyone interested, to create an economic game that will address the pressing issue of deforestation in the region of Hesse.

This challenge builds on the results of the Ecoquest: A Volumetric Storytelling Workshop, that was organized by documenta Institut and the Natural History Museum of Kassel in September 2023. This 5-days intensive workshop in 3D scanning and game prototyping was focused on creating a VR-game experience. During the workshop we explored a range of technological tools, available for civic ecological monitoring and explored how these advanced tools help safeguard our fragile ecosystems.

In the challenge, we would like to develop the game further: The game could explore a range of issues like forest management, resource gathering, wildlife conservation and water resources, connect the economic choices of the players to consequences affecting the financial health of the virtual world and through these mechanisms, connect the game to real-world initiatives to combat deforestation.

We invite people with various skill sets and knowledge to participate in our challenge:

  • People with technical skills: Game design and development, coding, blockchain, NFT
  • People working in sustainability and education, especially regarding environmental protection and conservation (knowledge of forestry, conservation, and sustainability principles in order to guide the game's narrative and mechanics to accurately reflect real-world issues)
  • People working in education and outreach (communicating the project's purpose and real-world impact to players and the broader community)
  • Graphic designers and artists
  • People studying business and marketing

In the first phase, the goal would be to create a game that will allow the players to gain insight about the challenges and the economic underpinnings of forest management. This phase will include game development, content creation, testing and feedback, educational integration and awareness building.

The goal of the second phase is to explore the tools (like NFT, blockchain etc.) that can help forest ecosystems in reality: We encourage the participants to explore the possibilities for in-game actions to have an effect in the physical world, through the means of Web3 technologies. For instance, blockchain could be used to track and verify in-game actions, making it transparent and ensuring that virtual efforts have real-world impacts. Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) could be integrated into the game, allowing players to own virtual trees or forest parcels, potentially connecting in-game actions to real-world conservation initiatives. These NFTs could represent actual trees or areas of land in the Hesse region.

For this second phase, the team working on this challenge could develop partnerships or collaborations with organizations that work with forests in Hesse, and explore fundraising mechanisms within the game.
